GUWAHATI, March 20 Reiterating its stance of providing seat reservation in state Legislative Assembly as per the demographic pattern reflected in the 1951 census report and 1952 electoral roll, the Save Guwahati Build Guwahati (SGBG) today said that the work of NRC update and constitutional safeguard must not be delayed any further on any pretext.

SGBG president Dhiren Baruah said that a memorandum regarding this had already been submitted to the then Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in December 2008. The memorandum had the consensus of a considerable number of eminent personalities belonging to different castes, creed, religion and ethnic groups. All the signatories of this memorandum accepted the 1951 census report and 1952 electoral roll as a parameter for providing constitutional safeguards, said Baruah.

The SGBG further said that whenever the work on NRC update and constitutional safeguard starts, a section of people try to create hurdles on one pretext or the other.

If further added that all encroached or occupied land in reserved forests, hills, sanctuaries, wetlands, riversides etc., should be cleared, developed and protected. Land transfer by way of sale, gift, donation or by any other means to non-indigenous people, outsiders and doubtful citizens should be stopped and all encroached or occupied land properties in different Sattras of the state should be recovered from the clutches of doubtful citizens and steps should be taken for protection and development of Sattras.
