SGBG concern over land-grabbing bids

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 27 Expressing concern over the spurt in land-grabbing bids by the land mafia in the city, Save Guwahati Build Guwahati (SGBG) has sought the district administrations intervention in the matter.

In a memorandum to Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner Ashutosh Agnihotri, SGBG president Dhiren Baruah said that in the latest instance the land mafia was victimizing Kumud Bhuyan, a resident of Barsapara and the general secretary of the local development committee.

Worse, a section of the police is also involved in the sinister developments, it said.

SGBG also lauded the Deputy Commissioner, saying that the DC immediately took up the matter with the police authorities and also cautioned the police against taking sides with anti-social elements after taking a public hearing on the matter.

SGBG said that its members had earlier visited the Barsapara area and took stock of the situation. We believe that the land mafia has been active in the area and subjecting the family of Bhuyan to a great deal of harassment, it said.

Bhuyan had earlier lodged several complaints with the police and the administration, highlighting the illegal activities of the land mafia, including encroachment on private land, government land, and roads and drains.
