SFI unit opposes Centres move on UGC

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, June 29 - The State unit of the Students Federation of India (SFI) said in a statement here today that it opposes the move of the Union government to replace the University Grants Commission (UGC) through the proposed Higher Education Commission of India (Repeal of University Grants Commission) Act, 2018.

The SFI said this move is a reflection of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Union governments desperation to replace the existing structure of higher education in the country with the intent to deregulate it. The move also shows the intention of the Central government, added the SFI.

The Union government also planned to introduce the Higher Education Empowerment Regulation Agency (HEERA) with the aim to replace the UGC and the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). This move was stalled in the face of widespread criticism. But now, the government has come up with the present move, said the students body.
