SFI unit gheraos Directorate of Higher Education

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 11 - Members of the State unit of the Students Federation of India (SFI) today gheraoed the Directorate of Higher Education of the State here today in support of their demand for providing scope to the students from economically backward families to get their names enrolled in the institutions of higher education, free of cost.

In a statement here this evening, the SFI State unit said its members also demanded creation of adequate numbers of seats in the colleges with proper infrastructure. They also demanded revocation of the orders to rusticate Upasana Das and Chandan Das of Chaigaon College.

This agitational programme of the SFI State unit members lasted for one and a half hours since noon.

The student body said in its statement that the Higher Education Directorate on May 29, 2019, said in a circular (DHE/PEN/Misc/171/2019/36) that those students who have back in some subjects in the previous semester and those who do not have 75 per cent attendance would not be able to avail the scope of free-of-cost admission. However, in the last academic year, these conditions were not slapped on the students.

Moreover, the students who have back in some subjects in their semester examinations are promoted to the next higher class.

The semester system has emerged as the most unscientific system because of the lack of infrastructures in the colleges. The above circular of the Higher Education Directorate has hit the students from the economically backward section of the society hard, said the SFI State unit. It described the condition relating to 75 per cent attendance as an undemocratic one.

It also said that Director Higher Education admitted that the issues raised by the student body were justified.
