Septuagenarian found dead at home in latest murder mystery

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 8 - A retired engineer, in his 70s, was found dead at his residence last night, with injuries on his head even as multiple theories emerged as to what actually led to the gruesome murder.

The deceased, Paresh Chandra Baruah, a resident of Dispur Law College Road in the Last Gate Super Market area, was found lying in a pool of blood when his body was first spotted around 9.30 pm in the ground floor of the house.

Joint Commissioner of Guwahati Police Debraj Upadhyay said that the wife of the deceased, who is a physician by profession, tried to call him several times, and, unable to get any response from the other end, she asked her personal driver to look for him in the ground floor only to find her husband dead.

We are working on a few leads that have surfaced in the crime scene. But, at the moment, nothing can be stated for certain as to what had actually transpired last night, Upadhyay said.

Investigators said that Baruah had gone out for his routine shopping last evening and was perhaps attacked the moment he entered the house.

Baruah used to live in one of the rooms in the ground floor of the building. We found that one of the shopping bags was almost in his grab. It also appears that the assailant(s) entered the house from the alternate door and was/were lying in wait for Baruah, investigators said.

Prime facie it appears to be a case of murder. But since nothing has been apparently looted from the house and the wife of the victim is not in a position to provide us information in detail, we are probing all angles including personal enmity to find out what exactly happened last night, investigators told this reporter.

The body has been sent for autopsy and a team of forensic experts along with senior police officials visited the crime scene along with a dog squad.
