Separate TET screening test demanded for hills

By CORRESPONDENT

DIPHU, Sept 14 - Student organizations of the two hill districts of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao have demanded that the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) be conducted by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and Dima Hasao Autonomous Council. This demand was made in a press meet held at the District Press Club of Karbi Anglong recently.

Addressing the media, the leaders of Karbi Students Association, Dimasa Students Union, Garo Students Union and Garo Cultural Society (GCS) demanded that TET should be conducted by both the councils in exercise of their authority as empowered under the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India. They urged the council chiefs of both the autonomous districts to constitute a committee to ensure that quality education is not compromised.

The organisations also expressed their strong opposition to the Government of Assam notification issued on August 30, 2019. They termed the notification as different to the assurances given to social organisations of the hill districts by the State Education Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma in 2012.

The organisations stated that the State Education Minister had assured organisations to hold Special TET for the hill districts of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts. In a complete U-turn, the State government went ahead to conduct TET in which only 12 Karbis made it through out of 438.
