Separate directorates for women, children hailed

GUWAHATI, June 12 - Senior journalist and president of Guwahati Senior Citizens� Association (GSCA) DN Chakravartty has congratulated Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on his decision to set up independent directorates from the present Social Welfare Department to look after the welfare of children, women and differently-abled people of the State.

Chakravartty said that several States of the country including Andhra Pradesh have separate directorates and secretariats to look after the welfare of children, women and the differently-abled, and also for looking after the welfare of the elderly citizens.

The Department of Differently-abled and Elderly Citizens in Andhra Pradesh also has a commissioner and secretary at the highest level of the administration.

Chakravartty suggested that the directorate as envisaged by the Chief Minister to look after the welfare of the differently-abled should also be designed to look after the welfare of the 2.5 million elderly citizens of the State.
