SILCHAR, April 18: Matching shoulders with the young and first time voters, senior citizens and Divyang voters of Karimganj district showed great enthusiasm, coming out to vote in large numbers on Thursday amidst tight security arrangements.
In Suprakandi area of the district, 80-year old Pushpa Rani Deb, a voter in the Divyang or person with disability (PWD) segment, was welcomed with great joy by the officials at the model polling station of Pallimangal High School. She was the first voter at the polling station, officials said.
"I am happy to be able to come and cast my vote," Pushpa Rani Deb said after casting her vote.
On the other hand, 90-year old Lalit Mohan Nath reacted with a rise smile on his face as he was being taken to the polling station on a wheel-chair.
"It is a great ocassion and I am fortunate to be taking part even at this age," Nath told The Assam Tribune.
Meanwhile, defying his ailment, Debendra Malakar, a Divyang voter was seen reaching the polling station with great expectations.
Moin Uddin, (64) a voter from Lamajuar area of the district said, " I am happy to see such a big turnout of voters," Uddin said.
It was noteworthy to see a large presence of women voters at the polling station of Lamajuar High Madrasa.
At the Panchgram Town High School, electorates were seen lining up outside the polling station as early as as 6 am.
Eighty year old Malancha Das said, "Don't ask me why I have come at this age. I feel I am strong enough to come and cast my vote and speak my voice."
As per the ECI data, there are as many as 13,38,005 voters in the district exercising their franchise for the Karimganj Lok Sabha seat.
