Senapati students call off blockade

IMPHAL, Feb 18 � The Senapati District Students� Association-sponsored 16-day economic blockade and �lightening bandh� were called off following an understanding between the striking students and representatives of the government, sources said.

A memorandum of understanding was signed in this regard at the Naga People�s Organisation office in Senapati district on Tuesday.

Tribal Development Minister DD Thaisii, MLA Thorii of Mao Assembly constituency, MLA K Raina of Tadubi assembly constituency, representing the State Government, signed the two-point MoU while 11 SDSA student leaders, led by vice president Elamding George and general secretary LR John signed on behalf of the striking body, the sources added.

As per the MoU, the government assured that the ongoing premix carpeting work of the 20km Maram-Senapati sector of the National Highway 39 will be completed �at the earliest� while the total amount of Rs 55 crore sanctioned for the improvement of the Taphou-Maram sector of the highway will be fully utilized.

Troops gun down KLA ultras: : Close on the heels of arrest of five leaders of Manipur-based outfit Kuki Liberation Army, including it�s commander-in-chief along with a huge cache of arms and ammunition, troops of 12 Assam Rifles claimed to have gunned down five suspected militants in an encounter late last night in Manipur�s Chandel district.

The Assam Rifles stated in a press release here that the incident took place during an operation near Taret R area under Chandel district around 10.50 last night.
