BARPETA, Nov 6 - The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FICCI) organised a seminar on Intellectual Property Rights of Barpeta Fireworks here recently.
The seminar was attended by PK Bagchi, attorney, Bureau of Patent and Trademark, Juri Borbora Saikia, Research Officer of Tezpur University, Bhaskar Dev Konwar, advocate of Gauhati High Court, officials of the State Industry Department, the district administration and persons engaged in the production of fireworks.
Speakers at the seminar dwelt at length on the need to protect intellectual rights, besides legal procedures to get patents and the advantages of patented products. They also assured all-round help and cooperation to the indigenous fireworks of Barpeta in getting a patent.
Representatives from the fireworks industry informed that due to lack of a registered trademark of the fireworks of Barpeta, unscrupulous traders were often seen selling inferior products in the name of Barpeta Fireworks. It is due to the lack of patent and other technical aspects that they have not been able to compete with products of Sivakasi and those made in China.
Besides, they also stated that they have no packaging technology, which makes their products costly.
