Seminar on Lower Subansiri Project

GUWAHATI, Jan 25 � The Axom Jatiya Gana Sangram Parishad (AJGSP) on Saturday organised a seminar on the topic, �Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project � the truths� at the Chinmaya Mission Auditorium, Rukminigaon here.

In his welcome address, Dr Aroop Jyoti Kalita, chief convener of the Parishad, highlighted the fact that the lack of proper discussions and involvement of the scientific community in various aspects of this project, has created a sense of confusion among the general public regarding the project. He stressed the need to logically and factually analyse the project from various angles.

Dr Ramesh Chandra Barpatra Gohain , Dean, Department of Law, Gauhati University, was the chairperson of the seminar.

The topic of discussion included the nature and purpose of the dam, safety of the entire project, status of compliance of necessary criteria, magnitude of the downstream impact and possibility of alternative solutions for present and future power requirements.

Engineer JN Khataniar, who is involved with the issue as an independent activist, explained the developments relating to the project. He also mentioned the flaws in the dam and highlighted several important aspects, including the gradual changes the project has undergone over a period of time and the change from a three-stage dam to a single dam now, change of dam type to concrete gravity dam, change in the required foundation depth, etc., said a statement.

The AJGSP will organise a seminar involving experts, concerned groups of Arunachal Pradesh and other neighbouring States to further discuss the impact of all the hydropower projects which have been planned in the region.
