Seminar on flood displacement held at Silapathar College

SILAPATHAR, Aug 22 - A University Grants Commission-sponsored national seminar on flood displacement and occupational changes in the agrarian society of Assam was held at Silapathar College on August 20 and 21.

The two-day seminar was organised by the Department of Economics of the college in collaboration with the Sissi Tangani Rural Development Centre.

Resource persons Professor KC Bora of the Department of Economics, Dibrugarh University, Dr DK Chakraborty, Head of the Department of Economics, Dibrugarh University, invited guest Dr GK Doley, Director of Sissi Tangani Rural Development Centre, Associate Professor Dr Baby Morang Doley, LC Doley, Lila Newar, along with the principal, vice principal, associate professors, scholars, teaching staff and students, attended the seminar.

The welcome address was delivered by the Principal of Silapathar College, Dr LN Pegu. He stressed on the need to address serious issues like flood and displacement. It needs remedial measures to mitigate the problem, he added.

Earlier, the seminar was inaugurated by Associate Professor of college, Dr Baby Morang Doley.

Several scholars presented papers on topics relating to flood displacement and occupational changes in the agrarian society of Assam.

Dr KC Bora of Dibrugarh University stated that 50 lakh people have been affected by floods since 1995. Several thousand hectares of agricultural land have been washed away and 90,700 people have been displaced from 20,557 villages.

The Head of the Department of Economics, Dibrugarh University, Dr DK Chakraborty stated that regular floods in Assam have severely affected the economy. Though the flood problem can very well be solved, it needs political will, he added.
