Seminar on dairy development

GUWAHATI, Oct 11 - A seminar on �Sustainable development goals of dairy development and its role in doubling the income of dairy farmers of Assam� was organised by the Directorate of Dairy Development, Assam in collaboration with the Department of AH & Veterinary, Assam, National Livestock Mission (NLM), Assam Livestock Development Agency (ALDA) and ARIAS Society on October 9 at Assam Administrative Staff College, Khanapara here.

The seminar was inaugurated by State Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Atul Bora in presence of Manoj Saikia, ALPCO chairman and other dignitaries from the State government, academia and representatives from various district milk unions and dairy cooperative societies, successful dairy farmers, entrepreneurs and other key officials of the organisations concerned.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Bora expressed his pleasure that the department concerned is trying to develop a need-based policy for the development of dairy sector in the State. He put emphasis on the creation of white revolution in the State, thereby achieving the goal of doubling the farmers� income by 2022.

Manoj Saikia, ALPCO chairman, has expressed his confidence that through this seminar the department will be able to frame an effective State Dairy Policy so that the existing and future issues faced by the dairy farmers of the State can be resolved.

Shyam Jagannathan, Commissioner and Secretary to the Government of Assam, Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, emphasised the need for arriving at a strategy for dairy development and overall growth of the dairy sector in the State.

He also stressed the convergence of schemes and projects undertaken by the department concerned and other related organisations to increase the income of dairy farmers of the State.

Haren Buragohain, Director of Dairy Development and Pulin Ch Das, Director of AH and Vety, also stressed the need for convergence of activities of both the departments for effective service delivery to the dairy farmers of the State. In the programme, subject specialists from the government, RCS, Assam, MD, AMTRON, Tezpur University, IIT Guwahati, Dean, College of Vety Science, Assam Agricultural University, among others, participated.
