GUWAHATI, March 13 - A two-day national seminar on �Banks and Financial Institutions in North-East Region: Prospects and Challenges� was organized by Indian Institute of Bank Management (IIBM) at its Khanapara campus in collaboration with MIMS, Manipur University and North Eastern Hill University on March 8 and 9.
The seminar was held with financial support from Union Bank of India.
Inaugurating the seminar, Dr K Ramesha, Director IIBM, highlighted the current scenario of the financial institutions in India. He appealed to the bankers and academicians to work in close coordination so that recurring problem like low-credit off-take with the resultant low Credit Deposit (CD) Ratio in the region can be effectively tackled.
Noted academician, Prof Debabrata Das, Department of Business Administration and Director CDOL of Tezpur Central University delivered the keynote address during the inaugural session.
In his address, Prof Das highlighted the challenges of the banking sector in India in view of the changing technological backdrop as well as the rising demand for prompt and quality services by the discerning customers.
Prof I Meitei, Director, MIMS, Manipur University, Dr Abhijit Sharma, Director, Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship, Prof RM Pant, Director, NIRD & PR, Guwahati and Prakash Gupta, Regional Head, Union Bank of India graced the occasion.
A panel discussion was also held following the inaugural session on �Emerging Research Issues of Banking and Finance�. The main objective of the panel discussion was to provide insights about the emerging as well as important research areas to aspiring researchers in the field of banking and finance, particularly in the North East region.
Panelists were unanimous that the penetration of banking and financial services in this region is comparatively low and, therefore, there is a great potential for research and subsequent policy formulation.
During the three technical sessions held during both the days, 16 research papers on issues pertaining to banks and financial institutions were presented. Academicians and research scholars from Tezpur University, Gauhati University, NEHU, Manipur University, Assam Don Bosco University, Assam Institute of Management, KC Das Commerce College attended the seminar.
