Selection camp for International Astronomy Olympiad

GUWAHATI, May 18 - An orientation cum selection camp (OCSC) for International Astronomy Olympiad (IAO) was held at the Regional Science Centre here from May 2 to 17. The camp was organised for the first time in the North East with an aim to generate interest among the school students of the region, according to a press release here.

Three students from the OCSC selected for IAO were introduced during the valedictory session of the OCSC. The selected students would represent India at the XXIV International Astronomy Olympiad 2019 scheduled to be held from October 19-27 this year at Piatra Neamt, Romania.

The three students who have qualified for the IAO 2019 are: Hithysh Kanth from Bengaluru, Dhananjay Raman from Delhi and Josyula Venkata Aditya from Hyderabad.

Dr Arup Kumar Misra, Director ASTEC was the chief guest of the valedictory function which ended with a colourful cultural programme.

The competing part of IAO consists of three rounds: a theoretical, an observational, and a practical. The International Astronomy Olympiad is carried out in the spirit of friendship and tolerance, where the competition is a stimulus for showing the participants� capabilities. But contacts, exchange of ideas and collaboration between students, teachers and scientists from various countries have a primary importance. The competition at the IAO is not the only part of the programme, the release added.
