By The Assam Tribune

GUWAHATI, March 23 - All the seeded players had a smooth sailing in the first round with no major upsets on the second day of the 3rd Assam Down Town University International Open Rating Chess Tournament, organised by the Assam Chess Club.

However, in the second round 4th seed Mrinal Kakati was shocked by youngster Pranit Malhotra while 7th seed Nandan Buragohain had to pay the price of being complacent as he was held to a draw by unseeded Anik Kumar Lahon. Similarly Abhinav Dubey drew his game with higher seeded Ritesh Kumar Sharma.

The 9-round Swiss League tournament, with classical time control will come to an end on March 27. The tournament carries a total prize fund of Rs 2 lakh and is recognised by the World Chess Federation (FIDE).
