Security tightened after bomb threat in MPP office

IMPHAL, March 10 - Police have intensified security measures here following a bomb threat at the office of the Manipur People�s Party (MPP) located in the heart of the State capital.

On Friday, a hand grenade was found in the office of MPP. The bomb was placed on the table of the general secretary (administration) by two unidentified persons including a woman on Friday at around 4.30 pm. Police suspect hands of a militant group intervening in the prevailing internal crisis of the party over leadership.

After the recent bomb attack on Assam Rifles personnel preparing for an equestrian championship at Imphal Polo Ground, the State police were on routine mopping operations in the sensitive areas of Imphal. However, it was suspended few days ago only to be resumed after the bomb threat to MPP office.

The police on Saturday conducted cordon and search operation at places around the MPP office. During the operation, the police detained and verified around 200 people. A total of 27 persons who could not produce documents to establish their identities were picked up for further verification, police said.

Meanwhile, leaders and workers of MPP staged a sit-in-protest in front of the party office on Saturday. The protest was staged by the party led by O Jugindro Singh who they claimed to be the constitutionally elected president of the party.
