Security stepped up ahead of R-Day

GUWAHATI, Jan 25 - Guwahati city has been put under a security blanket in view of the call given by militant outfits to boycott the Republic Day celebrations and the police is also taking assistance of the citizens� committees to prevent any attempt by the ultras to create trouble.

Talking to The Assam Tribune, City Police Commissioner Mukesh Agarwala said that though there was no specific input of any threat from militants, police is not keen on taking any chances and the entire city has been put under a security blanket.

He said that meetings are being held regularly with the citizens� committees at the police station level, as public cooperation is a must to prevent any ultra attack.

Agarwala said that checking of vehicles has been intensified. He admitted that it is not possible to check each and every vehicle plying on the city roads, but such checking definitely acts as deterrents.

At the same time, offensive operations are also being launched against suspects on the basis of intelligence inputs. Night patrolling, even on the lanes and byelanes of the city, has been intensified.

The River Police Force has been patrolling the rivers to prevent militants from sneaking into the city by using the river routes. On the security of the parade ground, Agarwala said that the field is guarded round the clock and CCTV cameras have been installed in the field, while the footage is monitored regularly.

The Police Commissioner said that the parade ground is under constant surveillance for some time as Prime Minister Narendra Modi had addressed a rally there on January 19. On that day also, the people were allowed in after thorough checking.
