Security concerns of newspaper hawkers discussed

GUWAHATI, March 26 - A meeting of the Assam Tribune Employees� Union (ATEU) and newspaper hawkers today held a meeting at the Assam Tribune Sports Club and discussed the security concerns faced by hawkers while discharging their duties, which has resulted in the newspapers not reaching the subscribers.

The meeting, held under the presidentship of ATEU president Siva Prasad Deka appreciated the move of the Guwahati Press Club in issuing identity cards to the hawkers after consultations with the district administration. The identity cards shall be worn by the hawkers during the lockdown period while distributing newspapers.

The meeting also discussed various other issues of the hawker community, especially their health concerns, and it urged the State government, the district administration, the police, and the newspaper distributors to take appropriate steps quickly.

The meeting also voiced concern over the harassment being faced by the hawkers from police and security personnel while delivering newspapers and urged the authorities to act tough on the unruly police personnel and ensure a safe environment for the hawkers.
