Security beefed up in Manipur for R-Day

By CORRESPONDENT

IMPHAL, Jan 23 - Security has been beefed up in Manipur, especially in the twin capital districts of Imphal East and Imphal West to ensure peaceful celebration of the Republic Day in the border State.

The police have been conducting combing operations in sensitive areas of the twin districts for the past few days. Round-the-clock patrolling in and around the core area of the capital has also been intensified.

The college students unions in the State have resolved to boycott this years Republic Day celebration to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 (CAB).

Meanwhile, representatives of six major students bodies in the State will hold a sit-in demonstration against CAB in the national capital on January 30, a day ahead of the Rajya Sabha sitting.

Boycott: A number of banned armed groups operating in Manipur have called for a boycott of the Republic Day celebrations. They have also called for a total shutdown for 12 hours on January 26.
