Security beefed up in city for Durga Puja

GUWAHATI, Oct 2 � Security in and around Guwahati has been beefed up for the ensuing Durga Puja with five additional companies of paramilitary forces being deployed to avert any kind of untoward incidents.

Security forces also rubbished reports of a Manipur-based militant outfit trying to unleash a reign of terror in the capital city during puja, as reported by a section of the media.

Senior Superintendent of Police (City) Deepak Choudhury told The Assam Tribune that although there is no specific threat perception in view of the puja, security arrangements are being timely reviewed and steps taken accordingly.

�Adequate manpower with an additional five companies of paramilitary forces has been deployed in and around the city,� Choudhury said, adding that the entry points into the city have been kept under vigil.

Asked on the reported threat from a Manipur-based militant outfit, Choudhury said, �The matter is being investigated and till date there is no such threat.�

The senior police official pointed that a chain of coordination is being maintained between the puja organising committee and the police station concerned round-the-clock, which is being monitored on timely basis.
