Security beefed up ahead of Ambubachi mela

GUWAHATI, June 14 - Police and security forces are gearing up to thwart any possible attempt by militants and jehadi elements to create disturbance during the ensuing Ambubachi mela.

Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Kula Saikia told The Assam Tribune that all precautionary measures have been taken to ensure that the annual mela passes off peacefully. All the inputs that the police is receiving are being verified thoroughly and actions are being taken immediately, he said.

Saikia said there is no shortage of manpower to secure the area and personnel from other parts of the State have also been brought in to ensure adequate security cover. Fixed police pickets will be deployed in the camps set up for devotees and domination of the entire Nilachal Hill right from the foothill is being carried out by the men in uniform, he said, adding, night patrolling has also been introduced in the area.

The Special DG said more than 200 CCTV cameras have been installed around the Kamakhya temple and the footage are scrutinised round the clock so that any suspicious movement can be checked. Police personnel in plain clothes have also been deployed in adequate numbers to keep a watch on all those visiting Kamakhya during the festival. Women police personnel have also been deployed in the area, he added.
