Security alert after blasts in State

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, July 16 Security has been put on alert after militants triggered two blasts in the State within the span of last 24 hours. A bomb went off in Udalguri district today while an IED exploded in Fancy Bazar the busy commercial hub here last night.

Though no one was injured in either of the blasts, security forces are not taking any chances in maintaining strict vigil across the State.

Suspected NDFB militants, according to police, planted the bomb under the railway bridge between Rowta and Mazbat railways stations in Udalguri district. The bomb went off in the wee hours today.

Meanwhile, all the police stations have been put on maximum alert with fresh intelligence inputs suggesting that at least three more powerful bombs could have been already planted in and around the City.

Top security sources told The Assam Tribune that the anti-talks faction of the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) is planning to unleash a reign of terror in the State, preferably in Guwahati.

As per our information, the explosives have been procured by the NDFB locally and planted in different locations of the City. We have intensified our vigil and alert has also been sounded, the sources confirmed.

Meanwhile a PLF leader was also arrested, including two others in Guwahati last night.

We have picked up a few persons for questioning in these connections, the sources stated.

Another hoax call was reportedly made to police this evening by an anonymous caller informing that a bomb was seen in Adabari area, creating panic in the area.

Police sources also confirmed that NDFB cadres could be holed up in the city and a manhunt has been launched to trap them before they manage to cause any damage. Another senior police official informed that security has been beefed up across the city and round the clock vigil is maintained, especially in and around vital installations.

He also urged the public to be conscious about what is happening around them to avert any kind of untoward incident.

Meanwhile, security forces halted traffic between Tezpur and Dhekiajuli for around three hours on the NH 52 in Sonitpur district this morning stating that a bomb was planted under Dipota village. The bomb was later defused.
