Section of cab drivers, owners strike work

By CITY CORRESPONDENT

GUWAHATI, Dec 15 - A section of Ola-Uber cab drivers and owners on Tuesday struck work here against the exploitation and loot by the companies.

The resentful drivers urged the companies to revise the fare tariff in view of the rising fuel prices immediately.

The prices of petrol and diesel have increased to such a level where it has become difficult for us to continue at a cheap rate. Moreover, the commission needed to be given to Ola and Uber for each ride has increased to 30-35 per cent from 25 per cent, Jayanta Nath, a cab driver said.

The drivers urged the companies to ensure the safety and security of the drivers.

Already, a number of unfortunate incidents have occurred with the cab drivers in the past. The companies have no such policy which ensures safety and security. We have demanded that KYC verification be made mandatory for the customers in the application so that the drivers get to know about them, Nath added.

Nath said more than 500 members were present in todays strike at Chachal and more than 6000 members have extended their moral support to the protest.

The drivers also demanded to provide Employees State Insurance and loan moratorium for at least a few months.

Meanwhile, the All Assam Cab Operators Association president Ismail Ali said that the body has not called any strike. The All Assam Cab Operators Association and the All Guwahati Cab Owners and Drivers Association did not extend their support to the strike.
