Scribes distribute relief items to poor people at Tezpur

TEZPUR, April 2 - To support the needy people facing acute food crisis during the lockdown, a number of sympathetic people from around Tezpur town have come forward to extend help.

Besides making people aware about COVID-19, the media fraternity here has been distributing food among the poor who are taking shelter on footpaths and temple complexes.

Sanjib Hazarika, president of the Sonitpur Journalists� Union, said that at this crucial moment, apart from regular duties, scribes need something more than goodwill. �We have generated funds among us through which relief materials have been distributed,� Hazarika said.

The president of the journalists� union said foodgrains were distributed to 39 members of NGO Soft Seed at Nikamul, and food was provided to 29 children of Nabaprabhat Orphanage here. �Moreover, we gave ration for a week to rickshaw and hand-cart pullers and some needy people under the BPL category at Lalmati area in the town,� he said.

In this context, he assured that the scribes� organisation would carry out more such activities in the days to come.

About 100 gypsies with 17 below five-year-old children, who were trapped at Mission Chariali area, were also provided food for one month and necessary healthcare and security.

Biscuit factories, bakeries closed: All food processing industries like biscuit factories, bakeries, etc., in Sonitpur district have been declared closed with immediate effect until further orders. The order issued by Additional District Magistrate Rojan Kumar Jha would supersede any permission issued earlier from the district administration.

Tezpur University form submission date extended: Tezpur University has extended the last date of submission of online application forms for admission to various programmes for the university�s entrance exams. The last date has been extended to April 30 from April 7.

In view of the lockdown, the applicants who are yet to obtain their caste certificates (such as, SC/ST/OBC (NCL)/EWS) and other relevant certificates such as, PWD/Ward or Widows of Defence Personnel/PRC, etc., may submit an undertaking in the prescribed format in place of caste or other certificates at the time of submission of online application forms.
