Scientist duo interacts with rural students

TINSUKIA, May 22 � The All Assam Moran Students� Union (AAMSU) organised an interaction session between two young scientists from Tinsukia, Dr Arindom Adhikari of Chaliha Nagar, Tinsukia, who is at present working as polymer technology scientist in Stockhom, Sweden and Dr Gohain of Panitola, Gondhia Gaon, at present working in the field of medicinal chemistry in Spain and the students of Borgaon High School and Barekuri High School under Makum police station, situated in a remote area recently. The session was organised to create the impression in young people that there is no alternative to study and with determination anyone can achieve his goal.

The scientists interacted with the students and described how they achieved their goal with sincere study. They advised the young students that they should study hard, crossing all the hurdles with determination and concentration.

Erosion threatens Satra: The historic Mayamora Tipuk Brajapur Satra, a religious and cultural centre of the Moran ethnic group situated by the side of Dibru river is being threatened by the erosion caused by the river. The erosion, that started on April 18, has already washed away an area of about 9 to 10 bigha of land including a portion of the boundary wall.

At present there is only 10 to 15 feet separating the Satra from the river. The people of the nearby areas organised Nam Kirtan to appease god for saving the Satra.

The Water Resource Department has put in efforts to save the historic Satra with the sanctioned amount of Rs 1.11 crore but the local people as well as the Satra Unnayan samity have expressed their dissatisfaction over the functioning of the of the department.

According to them, if no big plan is undertaken to save the Satra, it would be only be a matter of time when the entire Satra would be taken away by the river.

Bodies recovered: Bodies of Sankar Chetry, aged about 28 years and his sister Juma Chetry, aged about 24 years, were found at a waterlogged area in a paddy field near Sripuria recently. They were the children of Chandra Bahadur Chetry, resident of Lachit Nagar, Congress Colony, Sripuria of Tinsukia.

The siblings were suspected to be murdered by some miscreants. Investigation is on to nab the culprits.
