Scientific management of city traffic coming up

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 23 With the advent of the New Year, a special scientific vehicular traffic management would be effective on the roads of Guwahati.

Aimed at easing the vehicular traffic woes, the Kamrup (Metro) district administration has chalked out a holistic plan as per which specific areas will be demarcated along the entire stretch from Khanapara to Bharalumukh and then to airport road for parking of vehicles.

While there will be separate lots for both four-wheelers and two-wheelers, provision for parallel parking in certain specified locations has also been planned, said Deputy Commissioner Dr M Angamuthu while briefing mediapersons today.

There will also be areas where parking will be completely prohibited, he said.

He informed the media that the Public Works Department (Roads) has been set a deadline to complete the furnishing work of the roads by December 31, after which the new and scientific traffic plan will be introduced (January 1).

As per the plan, movement of commercial vehicles will be restricted on the GS Road and the space underneath all the flyovers in Guwahati will be used for parking of vehicles, starting from the Chaymile flyover and Bhangagarh flyover, said S Vishwanathan, Commissioner, Guwahati Municipal Corporation.

He also informed that all the parking areas will be manned by an additional force of ex-servicemen, besides the existing manpower.

Senior Superintendent of Police (City) Anand Prakash Tiwari said that the new traffic management would ensure less traffic hassles and would be beneficial to both the motor transport users and pedestrians.

Guwahati at present has 74 notified parking areas under the GMC.
