By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 13 - The Regional Science Centre (RSC), Guwahati, is going to organise the North East Zonal Level Science Drama Competition 2019 on its Khanapara premises in the city on October 14.

The winner and the runners-up teams in the zonal competition will represent the region in the National Science Drama Festival, which will be held at the Birla Industrial and Technological Museum, Kolkata, in December this year.

The aim of the drama competition is to encourage students, teachers and science communicators to explore and experiment with the dramatic form as a means of science communication.

Theatre or drama is an age-old tradition of our society used for entertainment, recreation and also as a medium of social interaction to put across the social message, or in other words, correcting the society in an indirect way, to bring a social change, said Basudev Mandal, project coordinator of the Regional Science Centre, Guwahati.

He added, Science Drama Competition is thus an excellent platform not only for showcasing juvenile artistic creativity but also for using the medium of drama as a potent tool for dealing with socio-scientific issues of current importance in our society.

Evidence suggests that good science dramas are able to engage the audiences emotionally and hence are much more effective in communicating complex socio-scientific issues, he said.

The Science Drama Competition is a multi-tier event organised progressively at various levels, including district, State and it eventually culminates at the national level, where it is organised on a festival mode under the banner of National Science Drama Festival.

The North East-level event will have Science and Society as its main theme, while the various sub-themes include topics like Gandhi and Science, Cleanliness, Health and Hygiene, Periodic Table and Green and Clean Energy.

The drama competition will start at 10 am on October 14.

Dr Sitanath Lahkar, eminent theatre personality and former principal of Cotton College, will be the chief guest during the valedictory function of the event, which will be held at 4 pm on the same day.
