Science Day observed at city institutions

GUWAHATI, Feb 28 - Along with schools of the rest of the country, Assam Jatiya Bidyalay, Noonmati, also observed National Science Day today.

According to a press release, the Bidyalay also organised a science exhibition to coincide with the day celebrated to mark the discovery of the Raman Effect by Nobel Laureate scientist CV Raman. A competition among the students from Class V to Class X on scientific experiments, science models and projects was also held.

The chief guest of today�s programme was Dr Narayan Chandra Talukdar, Director of the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology, Guwahati. He also released the annual science magazine of the school, Prabhat.

In his speech, Dr Talukdar encouraged the students to inculcate the habit of observing every object of Nature and said that language cannot be a bar in scientific thinking. He expressed concern at the increasing use of pesticide and its ill-effects and called for a new approach towards sustainable development.

The programme was anchored by Juthika Patowary, former Principal and a senior teacher of the Department of Mathematics. The overall in-charge of the National Science Day programme of the school was Sujit Kr Neog, a teacher of the Department of Science.

Programme at Arya Vidyapeeth: National Science Day was also observed at Arya Vidyapeeth College today with a poster contest among the students. The theme of the competition was �Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future�.

Dr Sivanath Barman delivered a lecture on �Science and Religion�. Dr Barin Sarma was the chief guest on the occasion. Dr Pradip Bhattacharyya, Principal of the college, presided over the function.
