NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Aug 20 - Two schoolchildren saved two of their classmates from drowning as the boat ferrying them capsized in Subansiri river in Lakhimpur district on Friday afternoon.
Four school students, studying in Bhimbar Deori Girls High School and Debesu Than Tribal High School in Bahngarah Dhunaguri under Bihpuria Revenue Circle, were crossing the river while returning home from school when the incident occurred.
All the four students were swept away by the current of the river for almost 3 kms. However, the two boy students, identified as Munu Patir and Anjan Kuli, braved the currents of the river and saved their classmates, identified as Sushma Kuli and Dainamoti Patir, both girl students.
Though the incident has earned a lot of kudos from the public for the act of bravery by the two students, it has once again exposed the risks faced by school-going students in riverine areas of Lakhimpur district.
