By Correspondent

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Sept 21 - As schools reopened across the state on Monday after almost six months, Borchapori-Balibheta High School near North Lakhimpur was unable to hold classes. The school in Ghunasuti Gaon Panchayat in Lakhimpur district became a victim of erosion by the Subansiri river, as it was swept away in just two days September 14 and 15. The school established in 1988 and provincialised in 2013 was an important institute in this riverine area cut off by the Subansiri from the rest of Lakhimpur district. Headmaster Subha Kumar Das said erosion by the Subansiri has been on since last year and many residents of two villages, No.2 Naharai and Balibheta, have been displaced. Noticing the advancing river, we removed the metal roof sheets of the school, and doors and window panels and some furniture before September 15, but the rest was devoured by the Subansiri, he said.

Das said two toilets built under Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan and NHPCs CSR project were also lost to the river along with desks and benches of three classrooms. The room built for mid-day meal along with utensils was also lost in the erosion.

The school has 113 students with 13 staff. On Monday, classes were held at an unused old building of Balibheta LP School nearby.
