DIBRUGARH, July 27 - At least 1,056 students from the Sonowal Kachari community, who secured the first division in the recent HSLC and HS examinations, were given cash awards in the form of scholarships by the Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council (SKAC) during a function held at the Government Boys Higher Secondary School here on Friday.

The Council specially felicitated Jyoti Sonowal and Shabnam Richa Sonowal for securing top ranks in the Higher Secondary examination this year. Jyoti Sonowal got the second rank, while Shabnam Richa Sonowal secured the tenth rank in the examination. Both received a cheque for Rs 1,00,000, traditional Sonowal Kachari gamochas and bouquets. They were honoured by Forest and Environment Minister Atuwa Munda and the Chief Executive Member of the SKAC, Dandi Sonowal. Other beneficiaries received scholarships amounting from Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000.

The Forest and Environment Minister, while addressing the students and their parents during the ceremony, said that students have been provided a peaceful environment to pursue their studies. A large number of students are securing first division and the pass percentage has also increased in recent years. These are all indications that students have been able to attend classes and do their studies without any disturbances. Earlier, students were led on to the streets by some vested interest groups in the name of agitations and demonstrations. Today, peace has been restored and the infrastructure in the education sector has improved to a great extent, Munda added.
