By Correspondent

JORHAT, Nov 16 The two co-mediators appointed by the Supreme Court to resolve the Assam-Nagaland border dispute, senior advocates Sriram Panchu and Nirjan Bhat visited the disputed border areas in Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat districts today. They made an aerial visit to the reserved forest areas of Sivasagar and Jorhat districts along the Assam-Nagaland border, which included Abhayapuri, Geleki, Dissoi, Dissoi Valley and Tiru Hills.

They later left for Merapani in Golaghat district. They were accompanied by the three DCs of Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat districts, district forest department officials and representatives of Nagaland government.

Our Spl Correspondent from New Delhi adds: The Centre has declined to indicate a time-frame for resolution of the vexed inter-State boundary dispute between Assam-Nagaland.

The Supreme Court had on September 2006 appointed a local commission for identification of boundaries between Assam and Nagaland . The commission is continuing with its hearings.

While hearing an application filed by Government of Nagaland in its original suit, the Supreme Court vide its order August 20, directed that apart from continuation of the local commission, possibility to resolve the issue through mediation may also be explored and for this purpose appointed two-co-mediators, said Minister of State for Home Affairs, M Ramachandran.

In view of this, no time frame can be indicated in this regard, he said.

As reported earlier, over the last couple of months, top officials of both Assam and Nagaland led by the respective Chief secretaries have held a series of meetings with the two co-mediators to explore the possibility of amicably resolving the boundary dispute. The commission is to report to the apex court by December.
