SBI staff body comes to aid of hapless flood-hit girl

GUWAHATI, Sept 12 - The State Bank of India Staff Association, North Eastern Circle, has donated an amount of Rs 35,000 to a flood-hit girl of Guwahati College.

At the initiative of Prof Naren Patgiri and office-bearers of the Guwahati College Teachers and Employees Co-operative Society, a function was held on Wednesday in the conference hall of Guwahati College. The delegation was led by Pranab Thakuria, president, and PK Baishya, general secretary of the SBISA, NE Circle, accompanied by other office-bearers.

After the opening remarks by the general secretary and the president of SBISA, a cheque of Rs 35,000 was presented to Rekha Das, a fifth semester student of Guwahati College, who is a resident of Upper Kurua village of North Guwahati.

Rekha�s father was a small farmer who died when he was hit by a motorcycle. On the 16th day of her father�s death, her home was washed away by floodwaters and the family had to reside in a relief camp.

The incident came into focus through electronic media and the State Bank of India Staff Association, North Eastern Circle, came forward to help her. The co-operative society of the teachers and employees of Guwahati College also extended Rs 15,000 to the girl.

The State Bank of India Staff Association, North Eastern Circle, has already arranged flood relief camps at Pathsala and Kayakuchi.
