�Say No to Crackers� campaign in Goalpara

GOALPARA, Oct 26 - With the aim of creating awareness on environmental pollution caused due to bursting of crackers during the celebration of the Diwali festival, a special �Say No to Crackers� campaign among school and college students was organised by Ellora Vigyan Mancha, Goalpara branch and Assam Science Society, Goalpara branch recently.

The constant endeavour of these organisations through several awareness campaigns are forcing people including children to go for pollution-free green Deepwali. Campaigns with positive messages for refraining from bursting of crackers also received massive response in several schools and colleges and among the public.

The leaders of these organisations Pradip Kumar Seal, Jonali Devi, Dr Ranjit Choudhury, Dr Dulal Chandra Baruah, Amiya Kumar Boro, Jubanasshwa Dhar, Dr Siddhi Nath Sarma and Shahjahan Ali submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner as well to the Superintendent of Police of Goalpara requesting the district administration to take strict measures to implement the Supreme Court verdict (October 23, 2018) restricting high decibel crackers to prevent sound as well as chemical pollution. Considering the harmful effect of crackers leading to neural as well as bronchial and other lung-related problems, the court verdict has also given the time slot of two hours at night for celebrating Deepawali.

With an appeal to celebrate this Festival of Lights to strengthen our unity and integrity, other members of the organisations, including Gurupada Chandra Sarma, Hasna Barbhuyan, Nijara Sarma, Nayanmoni Dutta, Chandana Sarma, Shampa Seal, Aparajita Choudhury, Mahesh Dutta, Pervez Ali also organised awareness programmes regarding ill effects of crackers and distributed pamphlets in different institutions like Baladmari High School, New Goalpara High School, JN High School, Central Girls� High School, PR Govt HS and MP School, Agia JNMemorial Higher Secondary school, Vidyapeeth High School, Goalpara College, Goalpara Government BT College, Mornoi Higher Secondary, Kuruwabhasha M V School, Dubapara High School, Nayapara High School and others. Colourful banners with slogans to protect our environment from sound and chemical hazards were also hung in different spots of the town.
