IMPHAL, Sept 23 - The three-day Sattriya Sangeet Samaroh organized by the Sangeet Natak Akademis (SNAs) Sattriya Kendra, Guwahati in association with the Akademis Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA) here since September 21, 2018, came to an end here this evening. During the Samaroh, several lectures on the Sattriya art tradition of Assam and the Vaishnavite art tradition of Manipur were delivered by the experts. It was also marked by the performances of a number of renowned artistes of the Sattriya and Manipuri Vaishnava performing art traditions.

Today, three impressive lecture-cum-demonstrations on the tradition of Sattriya music, Manipuri Vaishnava music vis-a-vis Assams Sattriya Ojapali music and the melodic structures in the compositions of Sankaradeva and Madhavadeva were made respectively by former principal of Jorhat College Dr Pabitrapran Goswami, Prof N Tombi Singh, a guest faculty in Manipur University and renowned singer and music director Tarali Sarma. The function was presided over by Prof H Tombi Singh, a former Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University and the present vice chairman of the JNMDA.

In his lecture-demonstration on the tradition of Sattriya music in association with Samhita Puzari, Dr Pabitrapran Goswami said that the stress laid on listening and singing the hymns to the Almighty by Srimanta Sankaradeva has made the religion he espoused known also as the Naam Dharma. The Bargeets that he had developed marked a special evolution in the Indian classical music.

Prof N Tombi Singh delivered his lecture on Manipuri Vaishnava music vis--vis Ojapali music of Sattriya dance in association with Guru L Lakpati Singh of Manipur and Guruprasad Ojah and his troupe of Barpeta. Prof Singh maintained that there are some similarities between Manipuri Vaishnava music and Sattriya Ojapali music of Assam.

Tarali Sarma in her lecture-demonstration on the melodic structures in the composition of Sankaradeva and Madhavadeva made an elaborate analysis of the methodical melodic texture ingrained into their musical compositions by Srimanta Sankaradeva and his apostle Madhavadeva. She also made exponential demonstrations to drive home her points in an impressive manner.

In his presidential address, Prof H Tombi Singh observed that the festival has been able to mark a very good beginning of an effort to bridge the people of Manipur and Assam culturally and expressed the hope that this effort would continue also in the days to come.

The lectures were followed by presentations made by Krishna Goswami and his group of Guwahati (Bargeet in Bardowa style), Tankeswar Hazarika Barbayan of Kamalabari Sattra, Titabor (solo Khol recital), Sharat Das of Barpeta (solo Bargeet in Barpeta style), the artistes of the Kamalabari Sattra, Titabor (Gayan- Bayan in traditional way), and Barpeta Sattradhikar Basistha Deva Sarma and his group (Thiya Naam in Barpeta style).
