By Correspondent

BARPETA, Aug 21 - The satradhikar of Patbaushi Damodardeva Satra, Gurukrishna Goswami left for his heavenly abode this morning while undergoing treatment at the Fakharuddin Ali Ahmed Medical College here. Goswami was 82 and was suffering from some illness for the last four days.

His demise has cast a pall of gloom in Barpeta and has been widely mourned here. A descendant of Bhattadeva, the doyen of the Assamese prose literature, Goswami became the 13th Satradhikar of this historical satra in 1971.

Since his inception to this revered position, Goswami engaged himself not only in religious sermons but also in the protection of Satra institutions and publication of books related with these subjects. He himself authored as many as 15 books on Vaishnavite beliefs, Damodardeva, Bhattadeva and other important matters.

His works and contributions were well recognised by the elite society across the State. Goswami was awarded national Damodardeva Award and Nityananda National Award. Besides, he was honoured with the Bidya Bhaskar award by the Akhil Bharat Bidyat Parishad Varanasi and several other honours and rewards.

His mortal remains were taken to the Barpeta Sahitya Sabha Bhawan, Barpeta Press Club where the people paid their last respects. Several organisations and persons have condoled the death of Goswami.
