Sasanka Hazarika to receive National Teacher�s Award

MANGALDAI, Sept 4 - Sasanka Hazarika, a 40-year-old graduate science teacher of Dahi Higher Secondary School and a resident of Punia-Pakabangipara village near Mangaldai will receive the National Teacher�s Award for the year 2017 from the State of Assam.

Sasanka who has been serving as an assistant teacher at Dahi HS school since 2014 has selected for this prestigious award by an independent national jury along with 44 other teachers of the country following an open online application process introduced for the first time by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. G Vijaya Bhaskar, Director, Education and Literacy Department of MoHRD by a letter informed Sasanka about this decision. The award will be given away the Vice-President of India M Venkaiah Naidu in a function to be organised at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on the occasion of Teacher�s Day celebration tomorrow.

The award carries a citation, a silver medal and a cash prize of Rs 50,000.

Talking to this correspondent, Sasanka said that receiving this national award as the youngest teacher is a great honour and he is delighted. �We have been selected from a panel of 145 teachers across India on the basis of the nominations recommended by the district level and state-level selection committees. I really feel very honoured and delighted to achieve this remarkable feat and that too as the youngest candidate,� he remarked. A science graduate from Gauhati University and a Post Graduate of Information Technology from Sikkim Manipal University, Sasanka Hazarika before joining as a regular teacher had served in a couple of institutions under Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan for several years as a computer faculty.

The news of his selection for the national teacher award from Assam has made the teachers� bodies and other academically-conscious organisations jubilant. The Darrang district committee of the All Assam Higher Secondary Graduate Teachers� Association offered publicly felicitated him at Youth Club, Mangaldai on Saturday.
