GUWAHATI, Jan 16 � A career best match haul of 13 for 88 by Sarupam Purkayastha enabled Assam beat Hyderabad by an innings and 56 runs in their Ranji Trophy Group C match.
On the final day of the four-day match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad today, Assam skittled out the home team for a paltry 122 in their second innings after being forced to follow on. They were requiring 178 to make Assam bat again. In reply to Assam�s first innings total of 393, Hyderabad were all out for 215 in the first innings.
For Assam, skipper Dheeraj Jadhav was the top scorer with 74 while Sib Sankar Roy (72), Tarjinder Singh (66), Gokul Sharma (54) Pallav Das (40) were the other useful contributors.
Hyderabad failed to cross the required target of 243 in the first innings to avoid follow on. Offie Sarupam wrecked the innings capturing five wickets giving away 59 runs. On the spin friendly track, J Syed Mohammad also came out with three victims. TD Agarwal (68), SA Quadri (50) and PA Reddy (41) were the only notable contributors for the home team in the first innings.
But it was Sarupam who single-handedly turn the match in Assam�s way removing as many as eight scalps in the second innings. Apart from GH Vihari (24), no other batsman even could offer remarkable contributions.
With today�s win, Assam bagged seven points and stood at third spot in the points table with 21 points from five outings.
