Sarbananda announces BJP poll planks

By R Dutta Choudhury

GUWAHATI, Jan 30 - Protecting the identity of the people of Assam and providing a corruption-free transparent government will be two of the main poll planks of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the ensuing polls to the Assam Legislative Assembly. This was disclosed by Sarbananda Sonowal, who has recently been named as the BJPs Chief Ministerial candidate for the elections.

He also said that the BJP is ready to come into electoral understanding with any party other than the Congress and the All India United Democratic Front. He also pointed out that the party has already reached understanding with the BPF and discussions are on with the AGP.

Talking to The Assam Tribune, Sonowal, who is also the president of the State unit of the BJP and the Union Sports Minister, said that solution of the fundamental problems of the people of Assam would be one of the main issues for the BJP. He said that the people of Assam are suffering because of corruption and misrule of the State Government for the last 15 years. He alleged that the promises remained on paper only and the Supreme Court verdict restraining the implementation of schemes citing lack of transparency is a clear indication of corrupt practices of the State Government.

Sonowal said that the first list of BJP candidates would be announced next month. He said that party leaders have not assured party ticket to anyone and the candidates would be selected only on the basis of acceptability among the people and winning prospect.
