MORIGAON, Feb 23 - The centenary birthday of two illustrious sons of Assam and distinguished freedom fighters of Morigaon district, Sarat Chandra Goswami and Rupram Sut was observed at Kapahera Secondary School today under the auspices of Kapahera unit of the Asom Kobi Sanmilan.
The programme began with the flag hoisting followed by smriti tarpan by Jadav Phukan, a social worker of greater Kapahera area. The open meeting held on the occasion was presided over by Ashok Deka, president, Morigaon Zila Kabi Sanmilan.
Addressing the gathering, Jadav Phukan said that two illustrious sons of Morigaon district� Sarat Chandra Goswami and Rupram Sut, were born on the same day that is on February 23, 1921 and proved their calibre in the educational field from a backward place like Kapahera of Morigaon district. Rupram Sut stood first in the entrance examination under Calcutta University way back in 1937 and Sarat Goswami got first division letter marks in all subjects. The duo got admitted into Cotton College in 1937 but left the college and jumped into India�s freedom struggle, Phukan added. Afterwards, both the revolutionaries of the Indian National Congress became the extremist freedom fighters, whose names were mentioned in Dr Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya�s Jnanpeeth Award winning novel Mrityunjoy, he added.
Sarat Chandra Goswami was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly from Raha constituency in 1965 and became the State Education Minister in the BP Chaliha Cabinet. Rupram Sut became MLA from Batadrava constituency. However, both the legislators followed the path of simple living and high thinking , he said. Rupram Sut left the Congress in 1970 and joined the Socialist Party which had towering personalities like Lakhyadhar Choudhury and Haladhar Bhuyan. He wrote a valuable book� Socialist Thinking, Phukan added.
Speaking on the occasion, Pradip Saikia, president, Asom Kabi Sanmilon, thanked the Kapahera unit of the Sanmilon for organising this noble function. Speaking on the occasion, Ujjal Pawgam, secretary said that Rupram Sut who was a sub-editor of the then Assamese daily Dainik Batori, which was edited by Deva Kanta Boruah was also a reputed journalist whose works must be evaluated. In the function, two books� Gunjarita Kapahera and Jana Neta Sarat Chandra Goswami and Rupram Sut edited by Nikhil Ranjan Goswami were released by all the distinguished guests.
