Sarania Kacharis protest non-issuance of ST certificates

By CORRESPONDENT

GORESWAR, June 19 - Following non-issuance of ST (caste) certificates to the ethnic Sarania Kachari community of Assam by the All Assam Tribal Sangha (AATS) since 2014, the All Assam Sarania Kachari Students Union (AASKSU); Sarania Kachari Sanmilani (SKS), Assam; Sarania Kachari Ganatantrik Nari Mancha (SKGNM) and other organisations took out a massive protest rally against the AATS at Tamulpur on June 13, demanding prompt issuance of certificates.

The protesters started their rally from the All Assam Sarania Kachari Students Union central office situated near the Tamulpur HSS upto Tamulpur PWD Road.

Prabin Deka and Dipjyoti Sarania, president and general secretary of AASKSUs central committee, Sonbar Barua, president of SKS, Assam, Dharmeswari Sarania, secretary of SKGNM and several members of the AASKSU anchalik committee as well as other organisations of the locality alleged that the Sarania Kacharis have been availing ST certificates since Independence, but it is unfortunate that the AATS has stopped issuing these certificates to the members of the community since 2014, i.e., just after the victory of Naba Kumar Sarania as a Member of Parliament from Kokrajhar in 2014. This has resulted in the Sarania Kacharis facing a lot of problems.
