Santu Mandal lifts chess title

GUWAHATI, June 20 - Santu Mandal of Income Tax clinched the title in 6th Jugal Kishore Newatia Memorial International Open Fide Rating Chess Tournament scoring 8.5 points from 10 rounds and pocketed Rs 70,000.

IM Arghyadip Das of West Bengal also scored 8.5 points but was declared second on the basis of tiebreak score. He got Rs 40,000. Laltu Chaterjee (8 pts) of West Bengal got third position.

Chingkhei Singh (7.5 pts) and Th Bipin Singh (7 pts) were adjudged as the best player of Assam and Guwahati respectively.

Altogether 195 players from all over India and Nepal participated in the tournament. International Arbiter Debasish Baruah of West Bengal conducted the tournament as Chief Arbiter. A total Rupees of 4,54,000 was distributed as prize money in the prize distribution ceremony.
