Santanu champ in Down Town chess

GUWAHATI, March 28 - Santanu Borpatra Gohain clinched the title in the second Down Town University All India fide Rating Chess Tournament by scoring 8.5 points from 10 rounds. In the final Santanu beat Soram Rahul Singh of Cachar. In the second board Y Dhanabir Singh of Manipur beat Mughaho Awomi of Nagaland to clinch second position with 8 points. Nandan Buragohain beat Pranab Kumar Nath for the third spot with 7.5 points. Chingkhei Singh also scored 7.5 points beating Trailokya Nanda and was placed fourth. Chiraranjan Bhuyan got fifth position scoring 7 points.

The tournament was organised by the Rotary Club of Dispur at the Assam Down Town University Auditorium, Panikhaity, here from March 22 to 27. The tournament was recognised by the world Chess federation and All India Chess Federation. A total prize money of Rs 1,50,000 was distributed among the players. The prize distribution ceremony was presided over by the organising president Dr Devajit Sharma where prizes were distributed by Ratna Singh, SP, Special Branch, Rotarian Dr Siben Dutta, Rotarian AK Hazarika and M Arun Singh, secretary, Guwahati Chess Association. Fide Arbiter Bibhuti Gogoi officiated the tournament as chief arbiter and was assisted by M Arun Singh and Salina Masum, stated a release.
