Sanmilita Mahasangha opposes Upamanyu

By Correspondent

TEZPUR, May 2 - Stating that advocate Upamanyu Hazarika is going to make the illegal foreigners legal citizens of India through his so-called anti-infiltration movement, the Asom Sanmilita Mahasangha on Sunday alleged that by speaking in favour of about 70 lakh illegal foreigners from East Pakistan staying illegally in the region till March 24, 1971 since 1951, the noted Supreme Court advocate is indulging in anti-national activity.

Challenging Hazarikas stand, office bearers of the Mahasangha Matiur Rahman, Chandrakanta Terang and Purnanda Rabha in a press release stated that it is very unfortunate that advocate Upamunyu Hazarika is advocating that the indigenous people of the region would be protected if March 25, 1971 is accepted as the base year.

The indigenous body also alleged that inclusion of the Clause 6 (A), 4 (A) and 3 in the Citizenship Act of 1985, 1986 and 2003 through amendments is an illegal and partial act, which will pose a serious threat to the very existence of the indigenous people of the region.

In this regard, the Mahasangha filed a PIL in the Supreme Court on January 11, 2013 alleging violation of Clauses 5, 6, 14, 21, 29 and 355 of the Indian

Constitution.

It also said that the Ahom Mahasabha, martyrs families and eight distinguished personalities of different tribal communities led by the Asom Sanmilita Mahasangha have been in touch with the Supreme Court regarding this burning issue.

Bench of Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Rohintan Nariman has given verdicts on December 17, 2014, July 21 and December 1, 2015 and March 10, 2016 on the issue, which is known to advocate Upamanyu Hazarika. Therefore, Hazarika should have appealed to the common people of the State to wait for the final verdict of the Supreme Court of India, the Mahasangha said adding that March 25, 1971 is related with the creation of Bangladesh, which has no relation with Assam or India. So trying to make this as the base date and year is nothing but an anti-national and anti-indigenous step, the press release said.

The Mahasangha through the press release also informed that for creating opinion among the masses regarding the issue, it will hold a mega rally at Tezpur on June 11 and 12.
