Sankardev Award for Basistha Dev Sarma

GUWAHATI, March 8 - Noted Satriya exponent Burha Satriya of Barpeta Satra Basistha Dev Sarma has been selected for the national-level Srimanta Sankardev Award, 2017, by the Government of Assam. Along with the Srimanta Sankardev Award, the State Government also announced the Sri Sri Madhavdev Award for the years 2016 and 2019 and the Kalicharan Brahma Award for the year 2018 today.

While Satradhikar of Sri Sri Mayamora Dinjoy Satra Jugadananda Chandra Goswami has been selected for the Sri Sri Madhavdev Award for 2016, eminent dance historian, scholar and critic Dr Sunil Kothari has been selected for the same award for 2019. Moreover, Satradhikar of Borongajuli Srimanta Sankardev Satra of Udalguri Harekrishna Mahanta has been selected for the Kalicharan Brahma Award, 2018.

Born in 1938, Burha Satriya of Barpeta Satra Basistha Dev Sarma has been working for promotion of Satriya dance and music as well as folk culture of the State. The other awards he had received include the lifetime achievement award for his contribution to the field of culture by Asom Sanskritik Mahasabha, Asom Jatiya Vidyalaya Fellowship, Sri Sri Mathuradas Burha Ata Award, Sri Sri Badala Ata Award and Sankar-Madhav Award.

Satradhikar Jugadananda Chandra Goswami, who has been selected for Sri Sri Madhavdev Award, 2016, is an alumnus of St Antony�s College, Shillong, and a retired teacher. He took remarkable steps for recognition of Satriya dance and music at the national level and preservation of sanchi manuscripts at the Mayamora Dinjoy Satra.

Renowned dance historian and critic Dr Sunil Kothari who has been selected for the Sri Sri Madhavdev Award, 2019, has enriched the cultural field of the country with his 12 books on different forms of Indian classical dance and allied forms. He received the Padma Shri Award in 2001 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1995.

Satradhikar of Borongajuli Srimanta Sankardev Satra Harekrishna Mahanta, who has been selected for the Kalicharan Brahma Award, 2018, is a known face of Satriya culture. He is also the recipient of the Pitambar Dev Goswami National Award, 2012, the Apurba Singha Award, 2012 and the Satrabhusan title conferred by Barpeta Satra.
