GUWAHATI, Oct 14 - One should take inspiration from the life and philosophy of Srimanta Sankaradeva, who was a multi-faceted genius and effected sweeping changes in society. Governor Banwarilal Purohit said this on the occasion of the honorary award-giving ceremony for the years 2015 and 2016 organized by Asom Sattra Mahasabha at Rabindra Bhawan last evening.

Purohit, at the outset, congratulated the organisers for holding such an event to popularise the creative art and culture of the legendary 15th-century saint-reformer Srimanta Sankaradeva. He said Sankaradeva was a great saint, scholar, poet, playwright, dancer and socio-religious reformer whose contributions in cultural and societal aspects built the greater Assamese community in a period of crisis.

The Governor added that in history, after Gautam Buddha, Srimanta Sankaradevas name should come. There is no end to the narration of creative works of Sankaradeva. His contributions in diverse fields are treasures and constitute the lifeline for the State to progress. He staged the first play a hundred years before Shakespeare did. Through naamghars and sattras, the saint did a mass replication of ideas and philosophy of Neo Vaishnavism, he said.

The Governor conferred the Sattra Ratna Award for 2015 to Jogadananda Chandra Goswami, Satradhikar of Sri Sri Deenjoy Sattra, and the Sattra Bandhu award was given to Gopal Chandra Sarma. For 2016, the Sattra Ratna award was given to Basistha Dev Sarma, Burha Sattriya of Barpeta Sattra. The Sattra Bandhu award was given to Dr. Rabin Dev Choudhury and the Sattra Yuba Bondhu award to Dibyajyoti Saikia. The Governor also congratulated the awardees for their contribution to the development of the sattras and upholding the culture of Assam.

The Governor lauded the mission of Asom Sattra Mahasabha for the unification of the sattras and in bringing about cultural, social and spiritual advancement through the medium of the sattras, and congratulated all the performers of the Sattriya Dance drama for their performance.
