Sankaradeva birth anniv observed

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Sept 19 - The 570th birth anniversary of Srimanta Sankaradeva, the 15th-century religious preacher, saint-reformer, and litterateur was observed across the State today.

The occasion was marked by naam prasanga (prayers) at naamghars (community prayer halls) and sattras (Vaishnavite monasteries) that have sustained and propagated the legacy of Sankaradeva and his disciples.

Cultural processions and functions were another highlight of the day. Bhaonas (dance-dramas on religious themes) written by the saint were also performed. The performers chanted verses to the beat of the khol and bhor taals.

The city also had its share of the celebrations, with people visiting naamghars since morning hours. Various cultural programmes were held while bhaonas were also staged.

The occasion was also marked by religious discourses on the teachings of the saint and his role both as a religious preacher and a social reformer.
