SHILLONG, March 10 - Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma today assured the House that a review meeting would be held at his level to take steps in fighting crime against women and children and also drug menace in the State.
Replying to the discussion on the Governor�s address in which most members raised the issue of increasing crime against women and children, Sangma said: �the issue is the number one concern for all of us.�
Stating that he is �pained to see increasing cases of atrocities against women and children�, the Chief Minister assured the House that the review meeting would have a relook into the measures that are already in place to check such crimes.
Informing the House on some of the measures already in place, Sangma said, the Government has revived the Fast Track Courts to try cases of women and children.
He further said that the Government is in the process of constituting Special Courts to try cases of crime against women and children, besides strengthening the police force with manpower and legislation.
�Some of these measures would yield dividends, however, I assure the members of the House that at my level a review meeting would be held to relook on these measures,� Sangma said.
On the growing drug menace in the State, the Government �would go� after the kingpin and bust the drug cartel and also strengthen the Inspectorate of Drugs.
Stating that the pharmacies have become the source of psychotropic drugs being sold illegally, the CM assured the members that regulation would be put at place after the review meeting.
In terms of regulation, Sangma said, the Inspectorate of Drugs would be directed to take stock record of the drugs in the pharmacies on a monthly basis and also ensure that psychotropic drugs are not sold without prescriptions.
