Sandalwood haul

GUWAHATI, June 18 � The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence today recovered 282 logs of red sandalwood worth approximately Rs 3.5 crore from a Mizoram-bound truck near Basistha Chariali here this morning.

The truck bearing registration number NL OI K 9354 has also been seized and two persons, including the driver and handy man of the vehicle, have been detained.

Sources informed that the consignment was meant to be smuggled to China via Myanmaar where it is used in large scale. The wood is mostly found in Andhra Pradesh from where it is smuggled. �We are trying to get to the root of the smuggling racket and investigation is on,� a DRI official said.
